Is there a way to do this?

Post by BrendonKoz »

Our administration has decided that our "database" machines will be changed momentarily to ONLY allow accessing our paid, premium subscription databases. We currently are blacklisting (by hand, using REGEX thankfully) certain types of sites.

A staff member asked if it would be possible to allow them to click on a button to temporarily unlock the PC in order to show the patron something on the PWB-enabled PC (rather than making them move to view the staff member's PC), something outside of the premium databases that may help them find their "answers" quicker.

The problem is that we can see this becoming abused and simply unlocked without restraint.

So...

Would it be possible with any tools that you currently offer (in tandem or otherwise) to allow PWB to be run under a standard config by default, but upon pressing a button and entering a password (for instance), opening up the PWB to a non-filtered usage (without restart, perhaps a separate window instance?) that will time out (and close) after a set period of time?

...or a similar solution that would not allow the non-filtered instance to be left open accidentally or purposefully.

You could setup a PWB Shellbar button that opens a new PWB instance with a different INI file. The PWB instance that opens the Shellbar button opens can use an INI file that has the password enabled and a different filter file, or no filter at all.

Thanks, Scott. I forgot that was possible, and didn't notice the "ActivityTimer" setting. We have always used InactivityTimer... Thanks again!
