Just to update: I sort of have this working; I have the activity timer in the INI file set for longer than the building itself will be open, and I have the javascript command set the timer to 5 seconds (for testing) when I click the link. ActivityAction=Restart However, when the timer expires, nothi...

external javascript w/ activity timer question

Hi Scott, I'm trying to set up the following using PWB's external javascript features: Main page on our OPAC stations should display without any timers. When patrons browse our online databases and catalogs, they shouldn't be subject to any timers. When they click a link to access webmail, then the ...

You'll be much better off copying the .exe and .ini files, and any other support files, to the local computers before running them. When we tried running it over our local network it took over a minute for PWB to load; after we switched to having it copy over the files locally, it only takes a few s...

I've got a PowerOff batch file linked to the Quick Launch bar, so our computer shut down with only one click  Seriously though, PowerOff is a splendid, tiny program that we use on all of our PCs. <shamelessplug> My PC Checkout system also uses PowerOff to remotely reboot or log off public Inte...

We use Fortres on our public computers, and simply tell it not to allow applications to run fromany drive letters. This covers flash drives, since they get assigned a new drive letter when they get plugged in. You could probably do this just as easily with group policies or registry hacks.

After I get back from vacation (gone all next week, woo-hoo) I'll switch over to the latest version of PWB. I ran the INI updater, I haven't been keeping a real close watch on what's changed but it should be about the same (configuration-wise) as before. I'll let you know if we continue to have prob...

AOL Webmail disappearing while typing

Howdy, Today I had several patrons complain that, when using AOL Web Mail, their email messages would randomly just "disappear" as they were typing. They left in a huff, so I have no idea what actually happened, but they said it has happened several times now (this was the first I had hear...

You really don't have to "install" PWB at all - just make sure the EXE and support files can be found. We do the same thing, only I had already put together a script (before the functionality was added to PWB) that copied the PWB exe and other files from a server station to the local stati...

This is a shot in the dark, but it drove us mad here trying to figure out why VNC and our computer sign-up software would randomly ignore stations... Does your DeepFreeze installation use a server station to control when stations are frozen / unfrozen / etc.? I found that with Windows XP SP2, the bu...

Attaching files with Yahoo! mail

Hello, This afternoon I had a patron who is not able to attach files in Yahoo! (Hotmail works fine, as I regularly help patrons use that service). He gets the attaching file screen, with the flashing progress bar, but he never gets forewarded back to the message. Has anyone else experienced this pro...

I'm curious to know what sort of setup you have if you are using PWB for Internet access, but offering Outlook which would require each user to set up their email accounts separately, possibly each time they use the computer (if this is in a library setting)...

Do you only use one account for public logon, or multiple accounts? We have a local account on each computer that is used for public access. That account has ManageIE installed on it. No matter how you try to get to Internet Explorer, as soon as it switches to web page mode (i.e. you're in file Expl...

Ours is probably pretty atypical, we have a sign-up system that was develoepd in-house. This is simply launched from the Startup folder, and the log-on program runs the PWB setup script. I'm sure you could use policies to accomplish that as well, but I have, unfortunately, no experience with the Win...
